Birds on the Bay:


Celebrate Boundary Bay, a Special Place - Canada's top-rated Important Bird Area of 597 sites and a Hemisphere Reserve.  As a major stopover on the Pacific Flyway, this amazing area features habitats of eelgrass beds, mud flats, estuaries, salt marshes, bogs and watercourses which support more than 333 species of birds, some rare and endangered.  Get to know more - join with Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society and partners to explore habitats, see the birds and local wildlife, sketch and photograph, enjoy kayak trips and special events as we celebrate Birds on the Bay.

What to Bring

  • The walks will go rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.
  • Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes.
  • A good pair of binoculars and a field guide are helpful, but not essential. A limited number of binoculars will be available on a number of our walks.

    Ongoing events:

    Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Eco-Walks
    Take a leisurely walk (approx 1 hour) along well-groomed trails to learn about history and geology of the Urban Forest, learn to identify native trees and shrubs and have an opportunity to observe wildlife. Free!   All age groups are welcome. Wheelchair accessible. By appointment only - registration required.  Group Size - minimum of 5 - maximum 12.  Host: Sunnyside Acres Heritage Society Tour booking: 604-535-9288.

    Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust –
    Join the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust on farm field tours.  Learn about the role of farmland in wildlife conservation, and view a diversity of bird species.  The DF&WT program coordinator will highlight fields enrolled in the Grassland Set-asides. Farm field tours are available upon request but note the minimum size for a tour is 10 people.  For information call the DF&WT officer at 604-940-3392.  Visit the website www.deltafarmland.ca for information on their stewardship program.

  • Cleaning and Repairing Nest Boxes at Burnaby Lake Regional Park
    Over 200 nest boxes around Burnaby Lake provide homes for swallows, chickadees, Wood Ducks, flying squirrels and Purple Martins. From January to March, join members of the Burnaby Lake Park Association and BCIT to help clean, paint and repair nest boxes. Volunteers with the Nest Box Program learn techniques for cleaning and repairing nest boxes and recording nesting activity data, as well as basic bird identification. Come once or commit to a few hours one or two weekend mornings. Interested in assisting with ongoing monitoring? Spend one afternoon or evening in the spring and summer months observing and collecting data on the nest boxes. For groups larger than 5 people please register in advance. Ages 11+
