Educational Outreach Programs
Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society is proud to offer
quality educational field experiences that build community
knowledge, awareness, appreciation, responsibility and respect for
the environment in our parks and natural areas. We have developed a
strong network of experienced Naturalists and other leaders willing
to act as environmental mentors as we strive to connect urban youth
with nature.
Thanks to support from our sponsors and volunteers, we are pleased
to offer quality educational programming to schools in the White
Rock, Delta, Surrey and Langley areas. Our School Programs are
conservation-minded and provide a rich complement to classroom

Lynn
Pollard leads a bird presentation |
To
begin, a local area naturalist introduces the students to
the area of study with an engaging and interactive
powerpoint presentation. This presentation is easily
adjusted to meet the needs of students of varying ages.
The presenter includes some hands-on show and tell and
includes stories and information appropriate to the age
level of the audience. |
| We then leave the classroom
teacher with a resource kit that includes teacher resource
materials, student reading materials, posters and field
guides. In the case of the marine program, we also include
some hands-on artifacts.
As a follow-up to the marine or birds presentation, the
naturalist leads the class on a field experience appropriate
to the topic: bird watching or a beach walk. This trip is
usually booked three weeks after the presentation to allow
adequate classroom time with the resource kit.

Lynn sets
up a pond habitat |
Ponds
are fragile habitats and often difficult to safely access.
So, rather than taking the class to the pond, we bring the
‘pond’ to you.
As part of the initial
presentation, the naturalist leads the class in some
hands-on study of macro-organisms using magnifying glasses
and petrie dishes full of pond water. We then set up a small
fish tank ‘pond’ for the class to observe over a two-week
period.
